It seems like very month something new's being added to Team Fortress 2. There's so much in there in fact that it can be a little daunting for anyone new trying to jump into the game. While there's a whole world full of really advanced content, this guide aims to help make sure you've got the basic mastery of your chosen class, whether you're a first-time player or just branching out from your favorite.

Crafting

Crafting: It's How You Get Stuff

Unless you're a richie-rich moneypants and can just buy all the equipment you need for the forthcoming loadout recommendations, it's important that you become acquainted with the Team Fortress 2 crafting system.

As you play the game, you'll find weapons and items randomly that will populate in your inventory and can be equipped to your class loadouts. Chances are, you're not likely to get what you want though, and that's where crafting comes in. You can break down items into resources that can be recompiled into something you find useful by following the in-game blueprints (found in the Crafting Menu).

By merging any two weapons from the same class, you'll get a Scrap Metal. Merge three of those and you'll get a Reclaimed Metal. Take a trio of those and tape 'em together and you'll have yourself a Refined Metal.

Once you've made the raw metals needed for your particular blueprint, you'll likely need a Class and/or Slot token. To build a specific Class Token merge any three weapons used by the desired class. Slot Tokens are crafted by merging three items of the same equipment class (Primary, Secondary, Melee). You can transmute a Class Token of one class into another by merging it with any weapon from the desired class. Slot Tokens can be changed by crafting them with a weapon of the desired equipment class.

Once you've got all the pieces needed (as dictated by the blueprint in the Crafting Menu), simply slap 'em all together and get what you want. Do this enough and you'll have enough equipment for customized loadouts in every class.

Do note: Some crafting blueprints may require you to merge Metal, Class Tokens, and/or Slot Tokens with other completed equipment. These can be rather tiresome to create, but often their potency is largely worth it.

Scout

http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/xj6ibophstgyd3zrxxgo.jpg

The Scout: Catch Me If You Can

Key Roles: Capturing Objectives, Annoying People

Best For: Those who can't stand taking their finger off the W key

Like an F1 racer made of glass, The Scout is the fastest class in the set, but also incredibly fragile. He may count as two people when standing on an objective, but it doesn't take much to bring him down. You're going to die a lot as The Scout, but that's okay, it's part of the job. Your teammates may not appreciate your repeated sacrifice, but when you bring home the bacon, they'll all be singing your praises.

Loadout AScattergunBonk! Atomic PunchSandman

Sometimes you've got to do everything yourself. If your team's neglecting to clear Snipers and sentries so you can steal the intel, this loadout should make your day a little easier. Use the Sandman's alt-fire to launch a baseball at anyone standing in your way to daze them long enough for you to slip past, then down the Atomic Punch to whiz past anything and everything without taking damage all the way into their base.

Loadout B: Force-A-NatureMad MilkHoly Mackerel

If you want to get people real mad, use this loadout to whip around the battlefield harassing people with some guerilla warfare tactics. The hit-and-run combo of tossing Mad Milk on a big unit like The Heavy before popping them at close-range with the Force-A-Nature is surprisingly devistating. The Holy Mackerel is just there to embarass people when you run out of bullets.

Heavy
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/fbqsgtlvscw7lbtpxywq.jpg

The Heavy: For The Motherland!

Key Roles: Crowd Control, Conquer and Hold

Best For: Anyone who doesn't like dying

Who needs to aim when you can fire two-hundred dollar, custom-tooled cartridges at ten thousand rounds per minute? They may call it pray-and-spray, but The Heavy's not really the religious type. So long as he's got snacks for the road or his best friend,

The Medic, odds are you'll be able to perch on the battlefield and completely dominate the surrounding area until it's time to charge.

Just try not to catch any Sniper bullets in your big fat head.

Loadout A: Huo-Long HeaterShotgunGloves of Running Urgently

Once the Scout's captured the point, it's going to need a big man to hold it. This strategy works best with a Medic at your side, but the Gloves of Running Urgently will get you to the point faster than you would otherwise and once you're there, the Huo-Long Heater will deal damage to anyone who even tries to come close.

That thing runs out of bullets quick though, so having a trusty Shotgun on standby is important for those last few minutes.

Loadout B: NataschaSandvichFists of Steel

Sometimes you just have do things all by yourself if you want them done right. This loadout is designed for when you've got a choke point to defend and no Medic to heal you. Natascha will keep your enemies at bay by slowing them down, providing you with some additional distance for when you need to refuel with the delicious Sandvich.

If you find yourself without bullets or brothers in arms, the Fists of Steel will reduce damage taken from bullets forcing enemies up close and personal for a little Russian justice.

Pyro
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/th5q1yowmzg82fuferit.jpg

The Pyro: Burn, Baby, Burn!

Key Roles: Spy Detection, Blazin' Up

Best For: Those with a penchant for wanton destruction

Some men just want to watch the world burn. We'd prefer it if you started with the enemy team. Fire's the best way of sussing out a sneaky Spy, and it's also a pretty effective method of crowd control. You're not likely to survive if you wade into battle, but odds are they'll be feeling your contagious burning long after your dead.

Loadout ADegreaserFlare GunAxtinguisher

I don't want to set the world on fire, but if you do, this loadout should help. TheDegreaser does less damage but also decreases weapon swap speed. That's perfectly fine because you've got your trusty Axtinguisher to deal massive damage to burning targets. Should they manage to escape and start fleeing, theFlare Gun offers a long-ranged critical hit against burning targets. Can you feel the heat?!

Loadout BBackburnerDetonatorHomewrecker

If you've got a Spy infestation that could really do with some extermination, theBackburner is going to give you the most damage when you sneak up on a disguised Spy that thinks he's safe. Should he actually plant a Sapper on a sentry, you'll be able to give the Engineer a hand by removing it with theHomewrecker before clocking that dirty frenchman in the face with it or popping him with one of the Detonator's explosive rounds (which will also ignite everyone adjacent to him).

Sniper
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/ysioysssf9eyljkabitg.jpg

The Sniper: Boom, Headshot!

Key Roles: Leveling the Field, Sniper Wars

Best For: The patient, the precise, and the petty

Often several football fields away from the action, The Sniper is usually in the least danger of all the classes. That is of course unless the other team's got one too. In that case you two will be playing an entirely different game with each other and ignoring the battlefield altogether while you fire aggravated shots at one another for a small sense of superiority, knowing you're the better shot.

Loadout A: MachinaRazorbackShahanshah

Should you find yourself locked in the throes of mortal combat with an opposing sniper, this loadout will give you the best chance of making him rue the day he ever crossed barrels with you. The Machina is the most powerful rifle when it comes to single, charged shots and the Razorback will help keep you from getting shanked by any Spy who notices you're distracted.

Should someone happen to make it on deck with you with a surprise attack, the Shahanshah will turn their one hit against you into a boon, providing you with 25% more damage per hit if you're below half of your health.

Loadout B: HuntsmanJarateTribalman's Shiv

If mobility's more your thing, the Huntsman is a fantastic weapon for mid-range combat if you can get the hang of its projectile arc, especially if you can manage to drench your enemies with piss by hitting them with a Jarate first. Should you find yourself cornered though, you're not likely to survive anyway so shank 'em with the Tribalman's Shiv and let them enjoy the bleeding damage after you're gone.

Demoman
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/cn0in3njurg2jqvkcvdt.jpg

The Demoman: Ka-Boom!

Key Roles: Defending Objectives, Blowing Shit Up

Best For:  Folks who enjoy a well-placed trap

It takes a lot of skill to play The Demoman effectively. In addition to having a mastery over geometry in motion so you can ricochet your grenades directly into your enemy's face, you also need to be adept at the art of deception. A great Demoman can lay traps with sticky grenades and have opponents walk right into them for an explosive goodbye.

Loadout ALoch-n-LoadScottish ResistanceUllapool Caber

While that bloody Sniper's too busy having a pissing match with the enemy team's, it's up to you to defend the intel. The Scottish Resistance increases the damage and overall number of sticky grenades you can place from 8 to 14, allowing you to completely coat a room in high-powered explosives and detonate them individually rather than blowing your whole load at once.

The Loch-n-Load will have your foes rethinking storming your castle as it increases damage on direct hits, provided your aim is true. If they do manage to make it through your hall of horrors, the Ullapool Caber will let you smack them upside the head with a live grenade. Come get some!

Loadout BBootleggerSplendid ScreenScotsman's Skullcutter

Being typecast is bullshit, so break the mold by playing a Demoman that doesn't even use explosives! You'll be able to build up a charge meter with the Splendid Screen and bum-rush enemies across the battlefield, swinging your Scotsman's Skullcutter at their precious necks and lopping off their itty bitty heads.

Trading in your normal feet for a peg-leg with the Bootlegger will give you additional turning control mid-charge so you can chase down even the wiliest of victims.

Soldier
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/rkcrat9dgcjzsck8pt6z.jpg

The Soldier: Maggots!

Key Roles: Raining Death, Leading the Charge

Best For: The few, the brave, the proud

Don't think. Thinking's for the weak! Real men know how to blindly charge into battle and blow everything in their path to smithereens. If that doesn't work, you can always rocketjump your way past enemy reinforcements and rain down upon them a torrent of missile-powered fury. Who says you need a chopper for aerial attacks?

Loadout ABeggar's BazookaRighteous BisonHalf-Zatoichi

Stupid's your middle name. Or wait... maybe it's your first? Ah, who can remember these things anyway?! This loadout's about going balls-to-the-wall aggressive and holding nothing back. The Beggar's Bazooka allows you to load and fire up to three rockets simultaneously,

giving you the ability to launch a near-undodgable wall of death at the opposing force. This drais your ammo rather quickly of course, but that's alright because the Righteous Bison packs enough of a punch in its own right to be more than a backup when you run out. It pierces enemies, allowing you to hit multiple targets at once and never runs out of ammo.

For a cool trick, see if you can hit one of the Sniper'sHuntsman arrows to set it on fire for extra damage. When you've depleted all your resources, switch to the Half-Zatoichi. Once it's out, you're not allowed to switch back until you kill someone with it, but when you do, you'll be back at full health!

Loadout BDirect HitBuff BannerMarket Gardener

It doesn't take smarts to lead a team, it takes courage! Rockets from the Direct Hit do less splash damage, but a lot more on true hits, if you've got the aim for it you'll be able to significantly reduce the enemy forces before you even close the distance.

If you want to prevent them from getting away, fire at your feet for a rocketjump and switch to the Market Gardener and swing away. Hitting someone with that shovel while you're in the air will guarantee critical hits. Once you land again, your Buff Banner should be ready for deployment, giving yourself and all nearby teammates 10 seconds of guaranteed mini-crits. Leadership!

Spy
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/zgtfnecyiwn1x8xjsyiw.jpg

The Spy: Gentlemen...

Key Roles: Sappin' Sentries, Stabbin' Suckers

Best For: Smug bastards who enjoy ruining someone's day

You probably think you're pretty clever, don't you? I bet you do. That's why you want to play as The Spy, you pretentious jerk. Yeah, you sneak around the battlefield, fooling medics into healing you and stabbing people in the back, but that doesn't give you an excuse to be so god-damned self-congratulatory.

Why don't you take a break from touting your greatness for a minute and go take care of that sentry, The Scout's died a couple dozen times while you were patting yourself on the back.

Loadout AAmbassadorYour Eternal RewardCloak and Dagger

Because the Cloak and Dagger invisibility unit is motion sensitive, you can stay unseen as long as you want provided you don't move. Creep across the battlefield and lay in waiting deep within the enemy base before using Your Eternal Reward to stab them in the back and assume their identity. If things go south, pull out your Ambassador and put a slug in their head, it's a guaranteed critical if you hit.

Loadout B: DiamondbackKnifeDead Ringer

That Engineer thinks he's pretty hot shit. It's time to ruin his day. Use your standard Disguise Kit to blend into the scene before placing a Sapper on his sentry. Every building you destroy earns you 1 critical hit with the Diamondback, and should you expend all your lucky bullets before escaping, the Dead Ringer will throw them off your scent with by deploying a dead decoy.

Medic
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/embx4bujivmup4r9d8kl.jpg

The Medic: Do No Harm

Key Roles: Heavy's Best Friend, Critical Assault

Best For: People who can stand constantly being yelled at

MEDIC!! OVER HERE DOC!!! MEEEEDDIIIICCC!!! C'MON DOC, I'M DYING OVER HERE!!!

If that didn't annoy you, then you just might be the kind of person who can actually enjoy being a Medic. It's a thankless job and everyone will tell you that you're doing it wrong when you die, but the secret truth is that - like a good manager - The Medic knows how to make sacrifices.

Sure, you may have let The Scout, The Soldier, and The Pyro die at the barrel end of a sentry, but by playing favorites with The Heavy, you ensured a path was clearcut straight through to the intel. You're welcome, ingrates.

Loadout A: Crusader's CrossbowÃœbersawKritzkrieg

If you're going to help lead a full-frontal assault, you're going to want as much firepower on your side as possible. The Kritzkrieg loads your Ãœbercharge 25% faster and when deployed guarantees your subject deals critical hits for 8 full seconds, perfect for tearing through enemy forces. If that's not fast enough for you, the Ãœbersaw grants an additional 25% fill with every successful hit and completely fills the meter if you pull off a successful Spinal Tap kill using the taunt button.

Of course, you still have responsibilities as a Medic and theCrusader's Crossbow allows you to heal teammates at long-range by firing healing bolts right into their soft flesh.

Loadout BSyringe GunQuick-FixAmputator

Making sure everyone on your team is satisfied is a difficult proposition, but this loadout can help reduce a lot of their complaining. Unlike the other Medi-Guns, the Quick-Fix is designed to heal as quickly as possible and even faster when the Ãœbercharge is deployed but prevents over-heal. You'll need to act a lot faster, switching between targets to make this work, but the end result will be more saved lives.

All teammates in your immediate vicinity will receive some extra health when you taunt your enemies while holding the Amputator and in a pinch, your Syringe Gun will help stave off weaker aggressors. If you've done your job right though, you'll never need to use it as your friends will have your back!

Engineer
http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/decknrhobhaszjbnveyo.jpg

The Engineer: Constructive Destruction

Key Roles: Field Management, Scout Stopper

Best For: Tactical masterminds who like letting others do the real work

Actually shooting guns and stuff, that's for other classes. Engineers are brilliant tacticians that know a well-placed sentry, dispensery, or teleporter can change the dynamics of a map in an instant. You'll be making blockades to prevent Scouts from snapping up the intel while simultaneously providing your front-line friends with much needed ammunition. Just keep that wrench handy, there's a Spy afoot.

Loadout AFrontier JusticeWranglerJag

Find yourself a cozy, frequently trafficked area and enjoy decimating your foes with this loadout. You can take direct control over your sentry's aiming with theWrangler, giving you the ability to strike down any oncomers with precision.

For every kill your sentry racks up, you'll gain a guaranteed critical hit with yourFrontier Justice while the Jag increases overall build speed, allowing you to deploy this combo even faster than normal.

Loadout BPomson 6000Short CircuitEureka Effect

Tasked with defending the base, this assortment of tools will help ensure your fortress is impenitrable.

Firing the Pomson 6000 at invading Medics will reduce their Ãœbercharge and will also decrease a Spy's cloak if you hit one.

This will help keep Spies from being able to slink around the base with ease and also prevent a Medic/Heavy combo from going invincible and destroying all your hard work. When fired, the Short Circuit will destroy projectiles like the Soldier's rockets or the Demoman's grenades, again helping you keep your sentry alive and well while it fires right back at them.

Should you find yourself away from the base and hear those dreaded words, "Spy's sappin' mah sentry!" the Eureka Effect will teleport you back to base immediately so you can remedy the situation.

HATS!!!

http://images.complex.com/complex/image/upload/c_limit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_680/h6rsyk4dhstbakrsqvj3.jpg

Hats: The Only Thing That Really Matters

If there's one thing you need to know about Team Fortress 2, it's that no matter what class you decide to play, this game is about one thing and one thing only... Hats.... Lots and lots of hats...

Seriously, if you don't have cool hats, you might as well quit playing now. Nobody wants to see your ugly, default face running around the battlefield. It's not even like they're hard to come by, the game literally has hundreds and hundreds of them to choose from. Go pre-order a game or something, we're serious. The sign says "Silly Hats Only" and you better respect it!
