#43160 New version of GPU-Z now detects fake nVidia cards

Posted by Puddingsbane on 17 October 2018 - 03:00 PM

This is more on a software side of things but it's interesting non the less. You all seen it on websites like newegg, amazon, ebay and such there are a bunch of graphic cards that are falsely advertised on  what they are.

Modified BIOS to make the card look  like something else than it is. Cryptocurrency mining has seen many cards snapped up and dumped only to end  up  on auction sites like ebay, so it's very tempting for the seller to modify the BIOS of a low end card and make it appear as a modern higher end card, and make some extra cash in the process knowing most of  people are unaware of the changes and won't even look if the card is modified in any way.

TechPowerUp has released the new version of the GPU-Z software that now has the ability to detect those "fake" modified cards. It's not clear how they've done this but it works.

You can download the new version right now on TechPowerUp website here: https://www.techpowe...hpowerup-gpu-z/

Here's the comparison of how GPU-Z would determine a legitimate nVidia card over a fake one:

This new feature still won't protect buyers from buying a fraudulent GPUs, but it will allow them to determine if the card they bought was fake or modified in any way.

Hats off to you majestic people.

That's sad. Batman, Sam & Max, Tales From The Borderlands, Tales of Monkey Island were one of the best constructed video games ever. I grew up on Sam & Max and Monkey Island series.

Forgot to mention, one player per ban request only. So if there's two people you need to make two BR's.

Keep that in mind

#42736 Future new PC

Posted by Puddingsbane on 20 September 2018 - 09:37 AM

If I may jump in the discussion. I know this thread is here for a while, still I would like to show you what I think would be a better system overall considering price to performance ratio.

Here's what I've come up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/x4MMyX

EDIT: You could go with a 300 series motherboard and a pinnacle ridge chip to cut some corners and save some money but then you would need to update the BIOS in order for that CPU to work on it.

This would cost you roughly around 870€ in total, give or take.

#42729 How did it start?

Posted by Puddingsbane on 19 September 2018 - 09:50 PM

Before we bought our first PC it all started with commodore 64 and games like Pac Man, Boulder Dash, Agent USA, Montazuma's Revenge, Batman, Bubble Bobble, Rampage, Ultima, Golden Axe and many more. First PC came and I experienced games at a whole new level ranging from Doom/2, Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Earthworm Jim, Rayman, Warcraft 2, Hexen, Red Alert 1 and C&C, Road Rash, Tiberium Sun, Lemmings, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Spider Man 1, Future Cop, Age of Empires, Diablo, Carmaggedon, Dungeon Keeper 1/2, Blood, HoMM 2, Blade Runner, Claw, Fallout, Blood Omen Legacy Of Kain.......I've literally stumbled upon one of my old childhood notebooks a few days ago where I kept track of all the games progress, secrets, cheat codes, games i played, games i had in my collection and so on. These are some of the games from that notebook, talking about a trip down memory lane.

#42016 100% dISK usage???

Posted by Puddingsbane on 11 August 2018 - 07:44 PM

Try checking for a process called "superfetch" when you start your PC next time. It's one of the main things that causes 100% disk usage and since you said it begins with you turning your PC on I'm most assured it's the main cause of the issue. The programs and other processes you are running in the background are written in your RAM memory (hence RAM caches), superfetch is basically making your hard drive to fetch those programs from memory to load quicker than usual. Don't be alarmed, it's not harmful at all and you can disable it if you want.
