PC upgrades on the way

Recommended Posts

I think the time has come to up the specs on my PC a little.

Currently:

CPU: Intel i5 7600K

GPU: Asus ROG GTX1070 STRIX

MOBO: Asus Prime B250-M

RAM: HyperX Fury 16GB DDR4 2400mhz

HDD: 4TB Toshiba for storage

PSU: Corsair CX500 80+ Bronze

Since the situation with all that crypto bullshit cooled off and GPU prices went down drastically I went browsing the used parts on one of the websites and came across some pretty interesting stuff, so here's the plan:

CPU: staying the same currently. maybe in near future I'll go for 7700K or even Ryzen chips for my next build

GPU: 1070 serves me very well for my current PC so no need in upgrading, but for my next build I'm opting for MSI GTX1080 Ti X-Trio beast

MOBO: came across the Asus Maximus Hero VIII for only 70$! 70 FREAKING DOLLARS for a 300$+ board! Hell yea I'm taking it, but the only thing is I'll need to flash the BIOS for my Kaby Lake CPU to newer version

RAM: 16GB will suffice but 16 more will definitely come in near future

SSD: I'm thinking M.2 and all opinions are welcome considering the SSD part.

PSU: will have to up it to 700w or 750w.

So to sum it up - new board, SSD and PSU for now

nice enough build

why would you want to upgrade

First and foremost because I have a small addiction problem considering PC hardware, and second I'm lacking the SSD and with the new 1803 windows build i am experiencing slower boot and load times than before. And with my current hardware I think that Asus B250 board is just weighing down the potential of the other components, it's not a bad board but it's mediocre at best and lacks a lot of useful features some higher end ones have. PSU wise I need extra juice just in case.

It smells like OC to me

Nope, I'm getting wattage errors sometimes and it randomly looses display but keeps working with a black screen. My guess is the GPU takes a little more the PSU can handle at higher loads and it crashes my drivers, that's why. I've always go with a premiss that there's no such thing as too much PSU wattage, better have more than less.

EDIT: Same thing is happening with my RX 470 8GB rig, but that's the known issue with AMD 400 series of cards.

  • 4 weeks later...

UPDATE:

Motherboard arrived few days ago!! Asrock Fatality X370 Gaming Professional Series. Got it extremely cheap (I'm a bastard and a prick at negotiating PC hardware prices, and a proud one I must say) only 100$ for a over 300$ board. And in about 2 weeks (heard from a guy today) the Ryzen 7 1800X is arriving as well, again got it cheap for just shy over 200$. Will post screens and aida reports when it's done ;)
