Upcoming birthday gift for my friend

Recommended Posts

My best friends birthday is coming up so me and my two other mates decided to cheer him up by building him the ultimate beast of a PC. This plan was in works for some time now by 3 of us and money was saved like crazy. He's living in a little crappy apartment, barely makes money for a living with his outdated laptop (he's a photographer and a gamer that works for one of the portals here in Zagreb Croatia) and we thought he needs new tech for work and fun. Black friday sales are here so this is what we came up with:

Motherboard: MSI X370 Gaming Plus

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700x, 8-core, 16 threads, 3.4Ghz/3.8Ghz Turbo

COOLER: Still debating should we go air or liquid (but in my mind noctua will tame this beast pretty well so no need for high end liquid cooling)

RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000Mhz

GPU: Asus GTX 1070 Strix 8GB

STORAGE: Samsung 960 pro M.2 500GB - Windows and miscellaneous, 1TB 850 PRO SSD for editing, WD Black Series 2TB for storage or whatever

PSU: EVGA SuperNova 850W, 80+ Platinum, fully modular

PC CASE: Cooler master Storm Stryker white, ATX Full tower case

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

NOTE: Not all components will be new like GPU, PSU and CPU cooler. We needed to cut some corners because this build is high end and it would cost a lot more if fresh from the store.

He was always a laptop dude so this will be his first proper PC he will have. We've put a lot of time planning this build so share your thoughts :)

motherboard::i dont know much about new cpu socket but what get first look at asus motherboard first http://noname.zone/public/style_emoticons/default/newemo%20(4).gif

CPU:i HIGHLY recommend to use  intel gen8 cpu (even i3) in your case  i5-8600K overclockable ;) can be overclocked to 4.8 or even higher based on cpu cooler!! least thing your friend want high price of electricity and heat(amd famous of)

cpu cooler:you can't go wrong with air cooling system no pump fail,i have cooler master 212 (cheap) and my cpu running 4.4ghz with no problem at all...noctua are king of air cooling, german design.. :prettiness: don't get me wrong  liquid coolers are good for looks of case or maybe u using 128gh of ram....

ram:16 is enough find something 3000mhz with cl15 ((90 percent buyer don't know what it is..long story short it's so important to have lower cl number :D)) lower better

graphic:go with 1070 ti its same price (even lower as 1070 normal) ASUS is great choose!!

storage:i don't think 1tb  ssd is that important he can just use 500gb ssd for windows and for also editing (its plenty) then he can save videos or pic on wd hard drive..

PSU:i'm not fan of  EVGA but they are good company but if you listen to me go with corsair or cooler master!

850 is enough for system but if he plan to buy another 1070 ti for sli he will need 1000w psu :D

PC CASE:: go with  cooler master mastercase h500p one off badas case out there or maybe corsair cases.. ((keep in mind its mid case h500p))

i'm not pc expert....do your homework before buying that staff 99% will work

correct me if i'm wrong  i'm just like you normal human (metalhead)  :vomit:  :vomit:  :vomit:

super budget setup would be:

cheap mother board

1070ti=1060 3gb asus

16=8 gb ram ((i have 8 gb and it work for me no problem with it..win10))

The power supply is overkill, you can swap it with a 650w one and still be able to overclock that beast. This build will draw about 350w idle, not OC'd. :) It will save you 100$~

Btw, what Noctua are you planning to get? I know Noctua NH-D14 65.0 sometimes requires a separately sold mounting adapter to fit MSI motherboards.

I like the build, great choices for the parts. Your friend is so lucky! Very nice of you by the way :)

Tell him an internet stranger said happy Birthday to you. :p

I don't have good experience with used parts, nor do I have any expierence with those new motherboards and the ryzen CPU's.
But this looks solid overall, maybe if you really need to cut corners you can always pick like a silver instead of platinum PSU, and / or more storage on a harddrive rather than extra SSD.

But ye multi-core = extreme fast rendering, and ryzen really benefits from speedy RAM.

What I heard is that those AMD stock coolers that come with the ryzen 5 and 7, are solid as rock. Far better than the Intel stock coolers (although that isnt hard to achieve but still..). And can even with their stock cooler be used for overclocking etc. without getting too high temps.

Build Is drawing close to 500W, that's why we went with 850W PSU to give more leeway when overclocked.

Cooler would be either D14 or D15 (both monstrous) and the mounting bracket is no problem because Noctua started shipping AM4 and TR socket mounting brackets with its products so no problem there :)

I wouldn't go with coffee lake build just because Intel is holding up the releases of lower end chipsets because you know AMD grabbing Intel by the balls in CPU department.

and I'll tell him a stranger said hello :)

Not my first rodeo assembling a PC. HAF case series are expensive, sure pretty and glorious they still cost a ton here where I live. There's no need for a second card, 1070 is mighty enough to handle anything you throw at it and running SLI doesn't give much of a boost performance wise so a single 1070 will be more than sufficient. 1TB ssd is important for his line of work and as for RAM, it's hard to find low latency high speed RAM memory, there's got to be a sacrifice somewhere. CPU wise, AMD is more power efficient than 7th or 8th generation intel and as Badass said Ryzen really likes high speed memory to work with. If you like roasted coffee you can roast your beans on 8th gen intel cpu's.

don't forget to buy 1070 ti instead of  1070 (normal)http://noname.zone/public/style_emoticons/default/newemo%20(4).gif  if it's same price in your country and also take picture of setup if you can please... thanks  :smile2:

You're pretty much good to go then :D

Btw I also own the same graphics card and it handles everything I throw at it on ultra easily asf. I haven't even OC'd it yet. :)

I know, it's the one I wanted to buy during the cryptocurrency craze but It was too expensive. That 1070 can handle anything, truly the biggest bang for your buck GPU, monster

Everything has been covered pretty much.

Nice build and you're definitely quite the good friends! :) I'm sure he'll love his gift.

My only remark would be about the ram. If he's a professional photografer he can definitely use/need more ram. 32 should cover him. If it's over the budget I'd suggest going for lower Mhz modules instead. In my opinion, 32gigs even considerably slower than what you've chosen will be of more use to him.

You can call us brothers for what we've been through, known each other since we were kids, went to hell and back together. He's really in a tough spot with his life situation so it's time to lend a helping hand.

As for RAM, baby steps :). Maybe we'll be able to sneak in an extra 16 gigs in there, we'll see.

MOBO: Asus my favourite

CPU: I heard thah ryzen 1700 is very good for editing work, at the same time time 8core/thread are better than 6/12(obviously)

Anyway, in my opionion the choice of 800w PSU is a well-wheight choice, amd eat lot of energy, overclock on this cpu make it became a beast, never save money on PSU it's the hearth of the rig, an undersized psu should compromised the build, cooler master is favourite.

Cooler: Take a big air cooler, cryorig make nice air coolers, often air one are better then liquid aio

GPU...nothing to say, 1080 is better than 1070, in italy their price are really similar, 1070 is 80-100 euros cheaper than 1080, lsearch for some special offer, that's my advice.

Anyway is a nice build, your friend must be proud of you! Good luck, let us know when this build are ready and share your friend comment on it :))
