Heroes & Generals is a free to play MMOFPS with RTS elements (more of the RTS element of the game later on). You can choose to play with three factions - Germany, United States and Soviet Union - so far those three are available and maybe in the near future we can have more to choose from. Each faction has a various soldier types you can play with - Infantry, Recon (sniper), Tank crewman, Paratrooper, Fighter pilot and General (the RTS part of the game). Use of every weapon in game requires repairs and ammo resupplies after a match. Credits are earned with every battle and the amount of them depends on how good you fair in that battle. War battles earn you warfunds you can spend to buy assault teams.

There are a few types of battles you can get in to so let's get started:

-Encounter- This is where you start. Encounter battles are played on a small map, are played fast and the mission is to hold the main objective until your teams score reaches 100 before the enemies do it. It's close quarters machine gun and grenade fest but you still need to be aware of infantry flaking you. Tanks, recon and planes are not allowed in Encounter, the game is played only by infantry soldiers and the vehicles they possess.

-Skirmish- These battles are played on a larger maps and have multiple objectives (maximum of 3) you must capture, hold and defend. Skirmish is played by infantry, recon and tank crews.

-Assault- It is played on the largest of maps and has 2-3 main objectives to defend or to capture and a number of smaller ones that lead to yours or enemies main objectives, this depends if you are on attacking side or defending side. Here you can use everything you have in your arsenal at your disposal.

-War- Now, this is crucial and it is not intended for people who run headless in to battle. Wars are played by Heroes (FPS part of the game) and Generals (RTS type of the game). War maps are massive with multiple attack lines and many objectives. How many infantry, tanks, recon, planes, vehicles you have depends on your General or if you have soldiers that are rank 12 or higher, those soldiers can use their own assault teams and deploy them in battle on the world map for other players to use them in battles. Those assault teams rank up as well as the soldier who owns them, so more they are used the more experience they will get and will be able to be upgraded. Basic Infantry will move more slowly on a world map because they are traveling on foot to the location where you send them, when they gain a rank you can upgrade them to become a motorized infantry which means faster deployment speed and other players when they use them they will have the ability to use motorcycles with them. Moral is crucial as well, when you win the moral rises and when you loose it drops. If your teams get slaughtered you must reinforce them using resources at your disposal and warfunds. War is won when one faction captures all 12 major cities.

Now, let's get you to know your type of soldier shall we.

Infantry is your basic soldier type, they can use all of the weapons available in game except for high magnification scopes, those are the recons specialty. Infantry has access to a large number of vehicles they can deploy with in combat, ranging from motorcycles, jeeps with mounted MG's, APC's, AA mounted vehicles, amphibious assault vehicles and others. You can play them as a straight forward attacker using an LMG or SMG, sniper by modding your bolt action or semi auto rifles for range, damage and putting a scope on the rifle (only 3.5x T-Post is available), AT infantry by equipping AT mines/grenades, launchers, equipping them with a wrench or binoculars and be a tank support and guard his back from AT ramobs. This all depends on your play style and how will you engage in combat.

Recon is exactly what it is, a unit uses camouflage uniforms to scout, mark and kill anything that crosses its path. Recon can use powerful bolt action rifles that can be modded to be one hit kill and equipped with a 8x magnification scope with a fine cross. When you start as a recon you begin with a 3.5x/4.2x/2x fine cross scoped rifle (Russian Mosin Nagant, German Karabiner 98 Kurz, U.S. M1903 Springfield). Recons have a limited selection of weapons and equipment points so equip your recon wisely, pistol as a secondary weapon is preferable if your position has been compromised. They can also use motorcycles to move around the map and special recon assault vehicles that pack quite a punch and pose a threat to enemy soldiers and vehicles if used properly. Also, recons are one of the most expensive units in game and the repair cost for a fully modded rifle is quite high if you use high end bullets and expensive scopes so make your shots count.

Tank Crewman is, well, it's a guy who operates a massive armored beast with a cannon attached to it. Tanks main purpose is infantry support, other tanks you encounter on the battlefield are just a mere obstacle you need to remove so you can continue to support your soldiers on the ground (or pilots in the air if you manage to take out enemy fighters). Tanks come equipped with AP/APCR - Armor Piercing- HE - High Explosive - shells and coaxial MG for mowing down pesky infantry in a barrage of MG fire. Since you will be manning these magnificent beasts don't get it in your head that you are invincible, you can easily be destroyed if you are not careful. Keep your distance, flank enemy positions and most importantly be aware of your surroundings and what is happening around you, and listen carefully for footsteps and other vehicles because each tank/vehicle has a distinct engine sound. Learn to separate sounds from friendly vehicles and enemy ones.

Paratrooper is used to harass enemy position from above and have access to parts of the map that regular infantry can't reach. Land behind enemy lines and take them from behind, land on top of the rooftops or hangars and strike from above or equip an SMG and drop in the heat of the battle mowing everybody you see. Surprise is your best weapon, use it wisely. And watch for those AA guns because they are your greatest threat.

Fighter Pilots dominate the sky and their main mission is to support troops on the ground. Use strafing runs, bomb runs to annihilate your foes and make a battlefield a better place for your comrades and a bitter one for your enemies. The fighter pilots greatest enemies are AA guns and other fighter pilots so make sure to free cam (by holding shift and moving the camera with a mouse) a lot to stay aware of what's happening around you and to plan the best approach for the current situation. Pilots can carry very little equipment so equip them wisely if it comes to the point of you being shot down and have to eject.

General, here we are! Generals can't be deployed on the battlefield, their intended use is managing your factions resources and sending assault teams to War battles, that's the RTS aspect of the game. You have a whole world map to play with and deploy your troops. This is how it works, Generals and Commanders (soldiers of rank 12 and higher) deploy assault teams on the battlefield to reinforce a city or to send help to the current battle. These assault teams are used by other players (Heroes) in the FPS aspect of the game. Think strategically, watch the front lines, anticipate where the enemy commanders/generals will send their troops and fortify those positions. The faith of the world is on Generals shoulders so give your enemies the taste of your power.

That's pretty much it, I don't know if I missed something or not. So! Overall Heroes & Generals is a very fun MMO game to play with your friends in your free time. Some of you saw i posted screenshots on our forum so there is some insight on how the game looks til the new render hits the next update. This game has still some ways to go but it is getting there, developers are doing their best to make our experiences better and to make the game better. There is some grinding to do in it but it's not that horrible, at least you'll play and rank up. Hope to see some of you in game someday so we can play together, it is worth it.
